President’s Report – May 2026

Dear Members,

Welcome to your May newsletter.

As we move into the summer period and with some fine weather already, we are looking ahead to what we hope will be a strong trading season. The return of the 9% VAT rate in just two months is a hugely positive step that the entire sector cannot wait for. That said, challenges remain alongside the opportunities. Labour costs continue to be the most significant pressure for many businesses and this is an issue the Restaurants Association remains fully committed to addressing.

In April, the Restaurants Association of Ireland, in partnership with the Irish Hotels Federation, hosted the 92nd HOTREC General Assembly in Cork. This brought together 47 hospitality associations from over 30 European countries to discuss shared challenges and how different countries are responding. It was an insightful few days and a valuable opportunity to present the very best of Ireland’s culinary and tourism offering, which will benefit the sector in the years ahead. It also comes at an important time as Ireland prepares for its EU Presidency in July. It was a significant achievement to bring this event to Ireland, and one that reflects our strength and standing on the European stage.

I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to our CEO, Adrian Cummins, who was honoured by his European peers with the HOTREC Award at the 92nd HOTREC General Assembly. This is a fantastic and well deserved recognition of Adrian’s unwavering commitment to our sector. It is deserved recognition for years of tireless advocacy on behalf of our sector, including the invaluable contribution he has made towards securing the reinstatement of the 9% VAT rate for all our members and for those working across our profession.

We are also looking forward to the Irish Restaurant Awards All-Ireland Final on May 18th, where we will celebrate the very best of Irish hospitality. Congratulations to all those who have been nominated or have already received awards. It is a testament to your hard work and dedication.

As always, if we can be of any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the team, who will be happy to assist you. We are stronger together.

Yours sincerely,
Seán Collender
President
