President’s Report – August 2025
Dear Members,
Welcome to your August newsletter.
July was a busy month for our lobbying efforts. Early in the month, both Adrian Cummins and I appeared before the Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment to discuss the rising cost of doing business and its impact on competitiveness. Over the course of the two-hour session, we outlined how the sharp increase in input costs over recent years has made it increasingly difficult and in some cases impossible to operate sustainably in the current climate. Oireachtas members were highly engaged and demonstrated a strong understanding of the challenges facing our sector.
In recent weeks, there has been considerable media speculation surrounding the reinstatement of the 9% VAT rate. Our position remains crystal clear: this is a commitment made in the Programme for Government, and it has been consistently reaffirmed to us by Government. There can be no backtracking.
While Adrian, myself, and the team continue to lobby relentlessly on your behalf, it is vitally important that you, our members, add your voice to this campaign. Please contact your local TD or Senator and make it clear that the reinstatement of the 9% VAT rate is a commitment that must be honoured. Share your story. Let them know how challenging it is to keep your doors open in the current climate. They need to hear directly from you.
As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, one of my key priorities during my presidency is the promotion of food tourism in Ireland. I’m pleased to share some good news on this front. Last week, Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke announced the development of a new national tourism strategy, which will include enhanced scope for Fáilte Ireland to support the restaurant sector. He also confirmed that a new all-island Food Tourism Strategy is in development. This is something we have long advocated for and it represents a significant step forward for our industry.
Finally, let me reiterate: we must all continue to be loud and united in our call for the 9% VAT rate to be reinstated. It is one of the most effective ways to support our sector at a time when so many are struggling.
Should you need anything, please don’t hesitate to contact the team. We’re here to support you.
Wishing you continued success and a prosperous end to the summer months.
